Right then, apparently I can get down to business faster than I thought.😮
I finished the outline of the novella, currently titled Through Windows and Hearts, last night and, being me, reread it quickly and dove into writing it. Around 10:30, I found my eyes had glued themselves shut, so I sort of had to stop. I might be a touch typist, but there are limits, even for me. However, when I promised myself I would stop and managed to prop my eyelids up, I found I’d written the first 3,008 words. In about three hours, if I remember what time I started right. Um, yeah, I think I like this story. Well, double-story. It really is one story wrapped within another, woven together. No, I can’t say too much more, and you know I don’t tend to anyway. I prefer to let the stories speak for themselves. It’s really a good practice, since you’re never there to explain or defend them to readers/agents/editors in the end.
I’ll definitely be diving back in tonight, and every spare moment until it’s done. I wanted to work on it all day today at work. I think my biggest concern at the moment (other than there not being enough hours in the day) is people wanting more of one of the layers of story, something I’m presently unprepared to do. I’ll have to wait and see how that goes. It feels both odd and liberating, doing a shorter work that isn’t in an existing world I built for a much larger project. It’s also a bit scary, because I’m used to having thought up the whole world before doing this, but that’s all right. Scary things push you to grow. Yes, I’m convincing myself too.
I find I’m now entirely unsure how long this is going to be, just from what I’ve covered in the words I’ve written. We’ll see how that goes though. I refuse to judge it or insist it fit in a certain length. First draft, it just takes as long as it takes to tell the story. I will worry about the rest later.
I think the neatest thing about this has been how fast it’s unfolded. I mean, I saw the picture that inspired this story just a couple of days ago and how I’ve got the whole thing outlined. At this rate, it’ll have been around a week from inspiration to finished first draft of the story. That’s rather amazing to me, and it makes me wonder what else I can do with the right prompt. Wait, no, I shouldn’t investigate that. I have too many stories to write as it stands.😀
